COURSES
Course 101: Prayerbook Hebrew I (9:30-10:30 a.m.)
Taught by By Rabbi Jay TelRav
This course will start at the beginning - identifying and building upon the letters of the Hebrew Aleph-Bet. It will enable students to feel more comfortable with the Hebrew of the siddur/prayerbook. In addition, students will begin to develop Hebrew vocabulary and knowledge of the prayers that will allow them to more comfortably navigate the liturgy of Shabbat and the Holidays. The class will include 10 sessions and will use the text book Aleph Isn't Tough by Linda Motzkin.
Course 201: Prayerbook Hebrew II (10:45-11:45 a.m.)
Taught by Rabbi Jay TelRav
This class is the continuation of Hebrew 101 (but completion of that course is NOT a prerequisite). In the last class, students learned the entire Aleph-Bet and, following a solid review, we will move forward with the language looking at significant vocabulary and structure that will help students to feel more comfortable using Hebrew in a worship environment.
We will be using the book Aleph Isn't Enough as our text, alongside additional materials provided by Rabbi TelRav, to explore deeper meanings and experience Jewish Liturgy. If you have any questions about your appropriate level of Hebrew instruction, please call the Rabbi. Class size will be limited to 15 students.
Course 365: The Bible After the Torah: The Writings (9:30-10:30 a.m.)
Taught by Rabbi Richard S. Rheins
The Hebrew Bible comprises three parts: The Torah, the Prophets, and the Writings. This year’s series will focus on the Writings. Specifically, we will concentrate on the Books of Job, The Song of Songs, Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, Esther, Daniel, Ezra, Nehemiah, and Chronicles I & II. (The Books of Psalms and Proverbs will require their own independent series!) At each session we will review another Book: consider its origin, and discuss its meaning and modern message. The class will include 10 sessions and will use the JPS Guide to the Jewish Bible.
Course 420: History of Jewish Music (9:30-10:30 a.m.)
Taught by Cantorial Soloist/Music Director Bryan Zive
This course will identify the origins of Jewish music from the late 1800s to today. It will focus on how world events greatly coincided with the musical curricula of prayer and education in our congregations throughout the years.
Why were Max Janowski's pieces sung slower when he directed them? Why were many Cantors initially hesitant to use Debbie Friedman's music? Whose music do we sing during services at Temple Sinai? Come listen to music, learn and discuss!
Cost: $72 for Temple Sinai members
$100 for non-members
For courses 101, 201, 365 and 420

This 10 week class offered by Kabbalah Experience covers the core concepts of the Kabbalah and provides a basis for understanding Jewish spiritual reality. Kabbalah is the 2000 year old mystical tradition of Judaism and the curriculum draws from the classic texts of Kabbalah including the Zohar, Sefer Yetzirah, Etz Chayim by Isaac Luria, and the writings of the great Hasidic masters. All texts are in English and no prior knowledge of Kabbalah is required.
