Sinai Sundays

Temple Sinai offers an exciting series of classes for adults on Sunday mornings from November through February. Although the series is over for this year, below is a list of the classes we had and will give you a taste of what to look forward to for the next session.

COURSES
Course 101: Prayerbook Hebrew I
Taught by Chazzan Bryan Zive

This course will start at the beginning – identifying and building upon the letters of the Hebrew Aleph-Bet.  It will enable students to feel more comfortable with the Hebrew of the siddur/prayerbook.  In addition, students will begin to develop Hebrew vocabulary and knowledge of the prayers that will allow them to more comfortably navigate the liturgy of Shabbat and the Holidays.  The class will include 10 sessions and will use the text book Aleph Isn’t Tough by Linda Motzkin.

Course 201: Prayerbook Hebrew II
Taught by Rabbi Keren Gorban

In this course, students will continue to develop the Hebrew skills and vocabulary learned in Prayerbook Hebrew 101.  In addition to increasing vocabulary, students will also learn basic Hebrew grammar, allowing them to better understand Shabbat and holiday prayer and passages from the Bible.  The course will also incorporate some basic conversational Hebrew.  The class will use the text book Aleph Isn’t Enough by Linda Motzkin.

Course 306: Intro to the Apocrypha:  The Hidden Biblical Books
Taught by Rabbi Rheins

The Biblical Book of Proverbs is one of the world’s richest sources of wisdom. In 31 short chapters, our Jewish ancestors crafted lessons and insights that reverberate with timeless inspiration. And yet, too few of us have taken the time to really study and discover the priceless gems of this sacred book. Don’t miss this opportunity!

The class will emphasize discussion and exploration of the proverbs. Each student will receive a copy of Proverbs, Annotated & Explained, by Rabbi Rami Shapiro.

Course 401: Psalms
Taught by Rabbi Keren Gorban

The Book of Psalms gives us insight into the earliest prayers of our ancesters.  Hundreds of years older than the prayers we use today, the Psalms continue to express the emotions and needs of individuals and communities.  In this class we will explore the Psalms as ancient prayers that remain relevant today and as models for expressing the prayers of our own hearts.  Each student will receive a copy of On the Book of Psalms by Nahum Sarna.

Course 501: Adult B’nei Mitzvah
Taught by Rabbi Rheins, Rabbi Gorban and Chazzan Bryan Zive

Temple Sinai’s Adult B’nei Mitzvah classes will begin in September.  Ardie Wandel will guide those who need beginning Hebrew to prepare for this wonderful Jewish journey.  His classes will be held on Tuesday evenings from 5:30-6:30 p.m.  Once the students are ready, Rabbi Rheins, Rabbi Gorban and Chazzan Bryan Zive will provide the theology and spiritual background in preparation for the Adult B’nei Mitzvah service.  The classes with the Rabbis will be held on Sunday mornings.

Course 601: Torah Cantillation
Taught by Chazzan Bryan Zive

The course will teach students how to chant the Torah using trope, an ancient skill dating back 2,000 years.  Students will not only find an increased understanding of our sacred text, but also its correct pronunciation and phrasing.
