Religious School Registration 2020-21

Temple Sinai Religious School strives to provide our students a meaningful educational, social, and spiritual experience where all learners create lifelong, joyous Jewish memories. Our program offers classes for Kindergarten through 10th grade students.

For the 2020-21 school year, we will begin the year with a Hybrid model, offering a Virtual program with monthly in-person programming. Each grade level with have weekly Virtual classes with a monthly in-person opportunity. Families can choose to opt out of our in-person opportunities. We will evaluate the situation in November to decide if changes will be made beginning in January, 2021.

We are excited to welcome our youngest learners to a monthly in-person learning session that will be supplemented with online learning opportunities. Students will explore Jewish values and holidays through the senses. They will experience the sights, sounds, tastes and feels that connect us to Jewish tradition and meaning.

First - Fifth Grades
Our First - Fixth grade classes will meet virtually on Sunday mornings with a monthly in-person learning session. We are excited to implement a new curriculum this year that will support both in-person and online learning. ShalomLearning is an interactive, values based curriculum that helps children develop a positive Jewish identity. The curriculum is build on the principle of creating relevance between a student's secular life and Jewish tradition. The lessons incorporate Social and Emotional learning (SEL) that enable students to build positive relationships and make responsible decisions.

Topics will include "Exploring Racial Justice and Systemic Oppression", "Food Justice" and "Understanding Homelessness. The Tzedek America virtual session will be held monthly on a Sunday evening at 5:00 p.m. There will be one or two additional virtual sessions that will build on those topics. Sinai High: Ninth - Tenth grades
Sinai High will participate in a program offered by the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism (RAC) - the Social Justice Academy. The RAC offers an in-person seminar each year in Washington, DC that focuses on social justice. Their response to the cancellation of that program was the development of the Social Justice Academy. We will build our program around the opportunities this program will provide.

The Academy will offer three units that will focus on Civic Engagement, REDI (Racial Equity, Diversity and Inclusion) and Action & Advocacy. We will have the resources of the RAC in their sessions which will bring together students from around the country. Our teachers will participate in the sessions and will facilitate Break-out rooms for our students.

Hebrew Learning - Grades 4-6

We will be moving our Hebrew program online for the 2020-21 school year. This will offer our families more flexibility and greater opportunity to participate in our Hebrew program. Students will have a 30 minute group session followed by a 15-20 minute individual session each week. There will also be an online portal to support learning in between sessions. Parents will be able to choose from several blocks in the late afternoon and evening during the week.

It is our goal that every child who attends Temple Sinai Religious School and participates in our Hebrew program will be able to decode Hebrew (putting together words and sounds fluidly). Our Hebrew curriculum is based around the siddur, meaning that students will be able to decode and chant prayers and understand the general meaning of the prayer and where it came from. They will also study holiday-specific prayers such as the Hanukkah blessings and the Four Questions. Students will put their learning into action through weekly Tefillah (prayer).

We will keep our Religious School tuition at the same rates as last year. We realize that we are reducing the number of contact hours with students, but with our goal of maintaining in-person offerings, returning to an in-person model when we can and our ongoing goal of making our program engaging, meaningful and robust, we anticipate that our costs will remain the same. Our Religious School program continues to be subsidized by the Temple budget itself.
