We light the first candle of Chanukah on Thursday evening (December 10). As your family lights the candles of the Chanukiyah during Chanukah, remember the dedication and courage of the Maccabees. Believing that they should be free to worship God as their hearts and minds dictated, they willingly gave their lives for religious freedom.
Now, as we kindle the Chanukah candles each night, let them be a reminder of this religious freedom which we, at times, take for granted. Our ability to celebrate as we please, as our hearts desire, was the motivation behind their struggle. It is always easier to become a part of the majority than it is to remain a minority. This struggle has remained constant throughout our history. We must appreciate the religious freedom that we have today without allowing ourselves to become complacent due to the fact that we are now guaranteed that freedom.
We look forward to celebrating Chanukah on Sunday morning. Rabbi Callman and Dan Yolles will be joining our younger grades for singing and stories and grades 4-6 will be taking a journey to explore Chanukah in Israel, including a stop in Modi'in, the city the story took place!
We want to help bring joy and light into your home each night of Chanukah - please join us for community candle lighting each evening at 6:00 p.m. And don't forget our Chanukah Family Concert on Sunday evening at 5:00 p.m.

When you see someone doing something wrong, do you go tell the teacher (or person in authority?) How do you balance wanting to stay friends, but also doing the right thing when something bad should be stopped?
In Parashat Vayeshev, we read that Joseph tattled on his brothers, which contributed to their problematic relationship. Has anyone ever tattled on you? How did you deal with it?
Look inside the text (Bereshit 37:2), Joseph tattles on his brothers: יוֹסֵף בֶּן שְׁבַע עֶשְׂרֵה שָׁנָה הָיָה רֹעֶה אֶת אֶחָיו בַּצֹּאן וְהוּא נַעַר אֶת בְּנֵי בִלְהָה וְאֶת בְּנֵי זִלְפָּה נְשֵׁי אָבִיו וַיָּבֵא יוֹסֵף אֶת דִּבָּתָם רָעָה אֶל אֲבִיהֶם
At seventeen years old, Joseph tended the flocks with his brothers, as a helper to the sons of his father’s wives Bilhah and Zilpah. And Joseph brought bad reports of them to their father.
